What Is Sexual Harassment?
Sexual harassment can involve a wide range of behaviors, including:
- The demand for sexual favors
- Repeated, unwanted sexual advances and/or physical contact
- Verbal sexual abuse
- Graphic sexual abuse, such as the display of suggestive photographs or objects
In general, cases of sexual harassment typically fall into one of two categories. One category concerns the required toleration of harassment in order to maintain employment or to receive a promotion or a raise. In these cases, a single incident may be enough to build a strong claim for sexual harassment.
The other category involves cases where there is a hostile work environment. In other words, the workplace is such an abusive or offensive place that a person may have trouble carrying out his or her job duties. The offended person does not necessarily have to be the target of the offensive behavior. In these cases, it is usually necessary to establish a pattern of incidents that have created a hostile work environment.
